Synopsis
Buckley, a young, enthusiastic detector dog, was about to clock off from his regular shift at the Brisbane International Airport when he uncovered a shipment of smuggled exotic animals. Discovering that all but one, a chameleon named Ciara, and two turtle eggs, had perished on the long journey, Buckley makes it his mission to track down who is behind the smuggling ring and ensure no more helpless and endangered animals are killed. A fire is ignited within Buckley and he is determined to return Ciara to her home and reunite her with her family. Breaking all of his obedience training whilst battling his usual insecurities and self-doubt, Buckley, Ciara and a charismatic Californian mouse named Bo, set out on an international adventure that propels them from a world of structure and safety into dangerous, risky situations. With fast-pace, witty humour and suspense, Dion Summergreene takes young readers on a crime-fighting adventure like no other to discover an exotic world through the eyes of man’s best friend.
What initially drew me into this story was the plot – and the fact that the main character was a dog! What kept me hooked was the fun, fast paced plot, and all of the incredible action this story has to offer.
Buckley is an airport sniffer dog – he is highly trained, and unique because he’s a German Shepard and airport sniffer dogs are usually Labrador Retrievers.
The adventure starts when Buckley and his human handler, Adam, inspect a late mail shipment and they discover statues holding smuggled animals. Ciara is the only chameleon to survive, and she wants to get back to her family in Bangkok.
With the help of Buckley’s best friend, a mouse called Bo, they set off on an adventure that will change their lives completely.
This book was such a fun read. And absolutely perfect for middle grade readers.

This sounds so delightful Star but I love that it touches on real issues such as the illegal exotic animal trade and the important role that the dogs working in customs do to protect our country from seeds and pests. Introducing middle grade readers to animal protection through the narrative of Buckley is such a wonderful idea, everyone loves a doggo! Great review Star and so glad you enjoyed it!

I’m glad you enjoyed this one, Star! I thought it was such a cute story, and the whole time I imagined it as a kid’s movie. I could definitely see this as the start of a series, and I think it would be fun to see more of Buckley and Bo’s adventures! Agree that it is the perfect book for middle grade readers 🙂

Me too! I forgot to say in my review that it reads like a movie. It’s definitely something I could see being made into a film. =)
